Canine and Feline Bullets

Thanks so much L. Grace Spencer. The New Jersey Assembly person has proposed fines to automobile operators, who have not seat belt secured the pet occupants of their vehicles. For now, just cats and dogs, but Spencer has privately been rumored to want to add iguanas to the blessed belt list. While Governor Christie bombed in the Republican National Convention and consequently made Jersey seem hooligan, it appears that Signora Spencer will save the day. After all, a state that cares for its pets can't be THAT bad...

Besides the $25 fines, Spencer wants animal cruelty charges (with penalties of up to $1000) brought upon any operator exposing his animal to harm vis-a-vis the failure to belt them into place while cruising. L Grace is one tough mithia, being a liability lawyer and all. There are two major issues:

1. Harm to the pet.
2. Harm to other occupants in the vehicle.  

Unbelted pets become bullets in quick stops. Indeed, the unfettered animal (or purse or grocery bag) can become lethal weapons when a stop is sudden. Imagine a can of niblets at 60 miles an hour striking the noggin of a matilda in the front seat of a quickly stopped auto. Bullets of corn... or dogs or cats... or Birkin purses coming forwards can be disquieting.

There are some, perhaps those who live in sandaled states like New Hampshire, who might posit that Spencer's proposal is too constraining, too freedom robbing. While they may be right, it remains necessary to protect pets. After all, aren't dogs and cats members of the drivers' families? Like kids and old people, the unwashed middle group needs to tend to i cani e gatti.

As for New Jersey, it must be awash in cash, despite its deep debt and poor job creation. Garden State politicians, like Spencer, must nonetheless have lots of time to burn. But not to waste. For sure, others will follow Spencer's lead in developing sensible legislation. Even if that so called sensible legislation defies rationality.

Hmmm..., come to think about the bullet thing... Shouldn't there be requirements for belting everything in a car each time it moves . Crash bullets can be lethal. Also, don't give short shrift to coins. Hard and edgy, these round discs can penetrate skin if given the right angle.

The rumor around Trenton is that the state will begin crash testing dogs and cats as of primo ottobre due mila e dodici. That is a good thing, pets are precious cargo. Cargo, indeed! Clutch Cargo...
