UFC 117, Silva vs Sonnen
UFC 117 is coming up on August 7th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The featured bout is the middleweight (185 lb) championship between Anderson (The Spider) Silva (26-4-0) and Chael Sonnen (26-10-1). Silva has held the crown since 2006. The fight should prove interesting, if not entertaining.
Silva is a smooth, athletic, and hard to hit master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He comes into this title defense as the favorite.
On a negative note for The Spider is what would be described as a terrible performance in his last outing against Demian Maia on April 10, 2010. He lacked aggression and he spent most of the fight dancing around the challenger. He taunted him and in so doing, embarrassed himself and the UFC. UFC President Dana White left before the fight was over in disgust. White has said that if Silva performs like that in the Sonnen bout, that the champion will be cut (punished?). While Silva won the Maia fight, he didn't win any fans.
Sonnen, on the other hand, is a wrestler. Having a strong will and the heart of a gladiator will make the Oregonian a difficult match mate.
Chael competed in NCAA Division I wrestling for the University of Oregon. On the down side, the challenger has been yapping like a terrier. Although he is an accomplished trash talker, such jabbering does not necessarily make him more classy. Sonnen has had 6 submissions in his 10 losses. His submission history may be a weakness going in, making it important for him to be able to get hold of Silva, to wrestle him and to dictate the nature of the fight . The contrasting styles of these fighters will make for an interesting exhibition.
UFC 117 is one week away. UFC matches are always surrounded by great excitement and enthusiasm. One factor, which will work in the challenger's favor, is crowd support. Whether this support and his own skills and moxie will be enough to overcome a great champion is in the offing. Should be great...
